Off and Running “We just offer the outlet for these athletes to basically stay healthy and have something to do,” he said. “The goal of the coaches, I think, is a little more technical. They want the kids to be healthy, but if they can help them excel in any area of track and field, they want to do that. Lathrup Runner Challenges
Despite taking three advanced placement classes, Williams’ 4.0 GPA has him near the top of his class. His future aspirations include attending the University of Michigan, studying medicine, and eventually working as a veterinarian. Southfield Sprinter
That fact was slammed home when she won the 100 and 200 meters at the Shumake Relays at Detroit Renaissance on April 26. Her 12.27 time in the 100-meter dash was just ahead of Romulus' Christienne Linton (12.32), and she won the 200 in 26 seconds flat. To read the complete article click here.
Akeredolu on Track
Akeredolu is already enjoying success in several heptathlon disciplines. At last Friday's OAA Division III meet, Akeredolu was first in the 100 hurdles, second in the high jump, third in the shot put and fifth in the long jump. Southfield Mustangs Race into Junior Olympics - 2008
Of the approximately 150 athletes on the Mustangs, 130 competed in the AAU state meet held at Southfield High and 101 of those qualified for the AAU Junior Olympic Games. Normally, those athletes would advance to a regional competition, but athletes from the host state get a bye into the AAU Junior Olympic Games. To read the complete article click here.
"TV doesn't do it justice," he recalled. "It is a huge creation and, I'm sure there are elevators in the stadium, but they're not available for the patrons that come in. And the only way you can get to the top É was to climb the steps straight up. And they went straight up, there was no elevator available to anyone but, I guess, the important folks. So it was quite a workout climbing all the way up to the top of those steps and I was truly amazed by the Chinese people, the elderly people, men and women, (who) were climbing those steps without hardly taking a deep breath." Area Track Stars earn AAU Jr Olympic Medals
Four Southfield residents earned medals for top-eight finishes Thursday. Ross Williams was third in the boys sub-youth (13 years old) 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 14.88 seconds. Dartis Willis placed third in the boys intermediate (15-16 years old) high jump with a leap of 6-4. Quenee Dale was sixth in the girls midget (12 years old) 80-meter hurdles (13.35) while Torin Wile placed eighth in the boys youth 1500 meters (4:32.24). To read the complete article Click here.
Southfield’s Penington wins two AAU Junior Olympic Games events
As of Tuesday afternoon, John Penington of Southfield had won two events at the AAU Junior Olympic Games, which began Saturday and runs through this Saturday. Penington won the sub-midget (11-year-old) 3,000-meter run Monday with a time of 10:17.82 and followed with a victory in the 1500 meters (4:47.51) Tuesday. To read the complete article click here.

Several Southfield-based athletes posted strong performances Saturday, led by Jordyn Willis, who took fifth in the girls primary division (eight years old and under) long jump with a leap of 10-feet, 11.75 inches. PERRY JOINS INDIANA TECH SPRINT PROGRAM Southfield, MI- The Indiana Tech Track and Field program is proud to announce the signing of Justin Perry (Southfield, MI / Birmingham Groves HS). Perry is a three sport athlete for the Falcons and will compete in the sprint program under Coach Edgar. Perry had a career best of 7.21 in the 60m, 22.63 in the 200m and 51.06 in the 400m. He is expected to make an immediate impact on the men’s sprint program. “With the level of training at the college level, I look to see quick improvement in Justin as he joins our squad of quality sprinters.” commented head coach Karen Brandt. “Under sprint coach Doug Edgar’s guidance and working among more experienced and accomplished athletes, I see Justin flourishing.
